What is Wireless Internet Access?
The term wireless refers to telecommunication technology, in which radio waves, infrared waves and microwaves, instead of cables or wires, are used to carry a signal to connect communication devices. These devices include pagers, cell phones, portable PCs, computer networks, location devices, satellite systems and handheld digital assistants.  

 

What is a Fixed Wireless System?
A fixed wireless system  uses radio frequencies requiring a line of sight for connection and fixed antennas with narrowly focused beams. Fixed wireless systems can be used for almost anything that a cable is used for, such as high-speed internet connection, and satellite television connection.

 

Is wireless internet better than dial up, DSL or cable modems?
Wireless is not better per se than any of the other options it is just much faster and gives you more freedom when using.

 

What equipment do I need to have WestNet wireless service?
A wireless network modem which is connected to your computer via its tower.

 

What access equipment  do I need to have Westnet wireless service?
You will need a wireless modem, connected to the computer via its network (RJ45) connection. 

 

Where can I buy the wireless network modem?
You do not need to buy the access equipment,  as it will be provided for you.

 

Can I install this myself?
No.  A WestNet technician will perform the installation to insure proper alignment and operation.

 

Will the wireless modem take up a lot of space?
No.  Our wireless modems are smaller than a loaf of bread.

 

Where will the technician install the wireless modem?
It all depends on the location of your house in proximity to the broadcast tower.  Prior to the actual installation, our technician will perform an assessment in order to identify where the best place to mount the wireless modem.

 

How long will it take to get the service?
We can usually set up the service within 72 hours of receiving your order and payment.

 

How do I know if I have coverage in my town city or county?
Because WestNet uses a fixed wireless, point-to-point, line of site system, specific coverage  will depend on the proximity of your house to WestNet’s network.  Please contact one of our customer service representatives at (702) 454-2682 to determine if service is available for your home.

 

Is my internet access unlimited?
No, but with Wireless Internet access your computer is always connected.  There are no time limits of how long you can use it.  There are transfer limits but they should be enough for all internet users subject to our Acceptable Use Policy.  Basically, use it, but don’t abuse it.  Your computer is connected 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year.

 

What to do If service is temporarily unavailable?
We are constantly surveying our towers to make sure that you will always have the best wireless internet service possible.  In the rare occasion that your internet service is temporarily unavailable to you, please contact WestNet Customer Service and a Technical Support Personnel will do their best to take care of the problem in the quickest manner possible.

 

What are the Minimum System Requirements necessary?
WestNet allows you connect your computer to the Internet whether you are running a Windows® or Macintosh® operating system. In order to ensure you get the most out of your Internet experience, we recommend you meet these minimum requirements: Windows 2000 PE or higher (including Windows XP and VISTA) or Mac OS 10.1 or higher, and Network capability (10/100 Ethernet pre-equipped)

 

Do I need a home phone line?
No. The WestNet Wireless Internet connection is bi-directional, meaning your unit will send and receive information, making it a complete solution for Internet connectivity.

 

Can I use wireless internet anywhere in my house?
Yes, because there are no cords or wires connecting the signal you are free to move about your home.

 

Does WestNet support Voice over IP (VoIP)?
Yes.  You are welcome to work with any VoIP provider to obtain phone service.   Please contact customer support (702) 454-2682 if you are considering VoIP.

 

Can I run servers on this connection?
Yes.  Clients wishing to run servers over a wireless link will need to notify us and have to pay for that ability. The running of servers of any kind is prohibited in any basic plan.

 

Is a router necessary?
A router is necessary only if you are wanting to use more than one computer on the service.

 

Can I use wireless home networking equipment with WestNet?
Yes you can,  provided you have the proper in home equipment such as a wireless router.

 


How secure is my computer?
WestNet guarantees the security of the wireless and IP network, however, it does not guarantee the security of your personal computer.   As with any Internet connection, it is highly recommended to use a combination of firewall software, spyware and/or anti-virus program at your home to prevent outside 
intrusion.  These can be purchased or download for free by various suppliers. 

 

Can my wireless service be affected by weather?
Not typically.  However a significant snow and/or ice storm may cause technical issues.  We constantly monitor the network to avoid such outages.  In the event of an outage, please call tech services at (702) 454.2682. 

 

Are email accounts provided by Westnet?
At this time, WestNet does not provide email service.  If you do not currently have an email account, we suggest you choose one of the following:
Google Gmail: www.gmail.com
Yahoo Ymail: www.ymail.com
MSN Hotmail: www.hotmail.com

 

Payment Options?
You have 3 options on how to pay for your wireless service:

  • Advanced monthly payment, via EFT
  • Secured online Bill Pay through outside service
  • Or old fashion check by mail which must be received by the 5th of every month or your service will be terminated

 

What is the WestNet Refund Policy?
All sales are final as wireless services are prepaid for each month.

 

If I move can I take the wireless modem with me? 
No, if you move you must return the wireless modem to WestNet as it belongs to us and would serve no other purpose to you without our wireless service.
